Below are some scenes from the June Tour with the Tri-County Club to the University of Science and Philosophy in Waynesboro and Swannanoa in Afton
- Tri-County and Waynesboro-Staunton AACA members gathered in Waynesboro for a tour of the The University of Science and Philosophy.
- A few of the Tr-County folks had a beautiful day to put the top down on their Mustang.
- Barry & Rose Linke drove their 1965 Ford Mustang.
- This beautifully restored 1967 Chevrolet Corvette was on display in front of the University of Science and Philosophy.
- The University of Science and Philosophy was founded by Walter and Lao Russell. This is a self-portrait sculpture Walter Russell created of himself.
- Walter Russell's allegorical masterpiece, The Might of Ages, was completed in 1900 and gained Walter Russell many medals and awards throughout Europe.
- Walter Russell's bust of author Mark Twain.
- Some of Walter Russell's painting of light associated with magnetism.
- A view of one of the museum's painting galleries.
- A replica of Walter Russell's 30-foot tall Christ of the Blue Ridge. The original statue stood at Swannanoa until 1989 when it was moved to storage. Unfortunately, the original was damaged beyond repair during the move.
- After visiting the museum, the group had lunch and then drove to Swannanoa, an Italian Renaissance Revival villa built in 1912 by James H. Dooley. The University of Science and Philosophy occupied Swannanoa from 1948 to 1989.

- The group gathers in the entryway of Swannanoa for a guided tour.

- This 4,000-piece Tiffany stained glass image of Sallie Mae Dooley is located at the top of the mansion's grand staircase.

- The abandoned, Depression-era clubhouse for the nearby Swannanoa Country Club. This building was rumored to be home of one of the area's best Prohibition era's moonshine stills and a favored supplier of government officials.

- This 1957 Ford Thunderbird belongs to our May meeting's hosts Duane and Rebecca Perrin. Many thanks for hosting our picnic and providing a detailed discussion about their 2019 garage fire and subsequent rebuilding process.
- This beautiful 1993 Cadillac Allante was recently purchased by Duane and Rebecca Perrin to replace a similar car lost in their garage fire.
- Lots of old cars made it to the picnic on a beautiful Sunday afternoon, including this 1965 Chevrolet El Camino driven by the elder Gregorys.
- Meanwhile, the junior Gregorys arrived in their 1967 Chevrolet Impala.
- Barry and Rose Linke drove their 1965 Ford Mustang.
- Larry and Deb Skillman arrived in their 1950 Ford.
- Bobby McClain's 1952 DeSoto always draws lots of interest.
- Nelson Driver drove his always trusty Willys-Knight.
- Todd Smith made the journey in his 1929 Buick.
- Jim Rimel departing in his wife's latest acquisition, a 1953 Ford pickup.
- W-S members congregating before lunch in the Perrin's rebuilt garage.
- Duane and Rebecca Perrin provided the program by discussing their 2019 garage fire and experiences with insurance companies and rebuilding. It was a sobering reminder that we all need to check/update our insurance policies and inventory our belongings.

- Life preserver autographed by numerous Indianapolis survivors.

2022 ACTIVITIES

- Jim Gregory's 1998 Mercedes SLK and Nelson Driver's Rockwood motorhome grabbed some of the street parking at Mrs. Rowes.
- Butch & Peggy Beverly made the trip in a future classic, their Chevrolet Camaro Super Sport.
- Approximately 30 W-S club members were on hand at Mrs. Rowes for the Christmas party.
- A mountain of presents await the annual gift exchange.
- Shrimp, chicken, pork tenderloin and all the trimmings was on the Christmas lunch buffet.
- W-S Region president and chief elf Jack Drago kicks off the annual gift exchange.

- Quite the turn out to celebrate the club's 70th anniversary.
- Dessert consisted of three wonderfully decorated chocolate and vanilla cakes.
- Coffee and cake was a popular after-dinner option.
- The guest speaker for the evening was Debbie Nolen, the AACA National Vice-President for Youth Development.
- Unfortunately, the Boogie Kings canceled due to a medical emergency so technology to the rescue - background music using a borrowed speaker and a Spotify play list accompanied by a video of the 1999 Glidden Tour.

- Robbie & Robert Gray were touring in Susan's Dodge street rod.
- Duane & Rebecca Perrin drove their 1957 Ford Thunderbird.
- Nelson Driver piloted nis 1977 Chrysler New Yorker with the assistance of co-pilot Todd Smith.
- Jim & Scott Gregory went touring in Jim's 1965 Chevrolet El Camino.
- A very nice 1978 Chevrolet El Camino driven by some Richmond club members.
- Bobby McClain was at the wheel of his 1952 DeSoto.
- Jay & Kay Mader were touring in their Model A Ford.
- Stu Allen and passenger (and neighbor) Alfred Meyer rode in style in Stu's 1989 Buick Regal.
- The Sargingers made the journey from Ruckersville in their Ford pickup truck.
- Barry & Rose Linke drove their 1997 Ford F-150 SVT Lightning.
- The first stop on the tour was the Old Providence Church.
- W-S Region President Jack Drago shares some information about the church and associated cemetery.
- The Old Providence Stone Church was built in 1793 and used until a new building was constructed for services in 1859. Thereafter it was used as a store, residence, high school and a meeting room. A fire destroyed the interior in 1959, but it was later restored.
- The "new" church located across the street from the Old Providence Stone Church.
- The Old Providence Stone Church cemetery. Noted interments include Cyrus McCormick, the inventor of the mechanical reaper, and his family.
- The Sinclair Oil Company display at the tour's lunch stop, Quaker Steak and Lube, located in Raphine.

- W-S Region members enjoyed the lunch offering at Quaker Steak.

- It's not a tour until the trouble truck shows up! Fortunately, it only took a quick jump start to get moving again.
- The Cyrus McCormick Farm, located down the road from the lunch stop. This site is now a historical site and Virginia Tech's Shenandoah Valley Agricultural Research and Extension Center.
- It was beautiful Saturday for a tour, with lots of scenery to take in along the route.
- The tour concluded with ice cream at a club favorite, DAP's ice cream in Stuarts Draft.

- "Masking up" has become the new reality for touring.
- A feed mechanism for one of the mill's grist stones.
- A hominy mill with a grist mill stone in the background.
- The mill's large grist mill stone. It was made of several large pieces of quartz that were shaped and then formed into a wheel by heating steel bands and allowing them to cool around the stone's outside.
- A corn cob grinder located on the mill's second floor.

- The adjacent miller's house, still occupied by the son of Mr. Howard Turner, who operated the mill from 1933 until his death in 1988.
- The barrel brand for Abraham Breneman, who built the mill on Linville Creek ca. 1800.
- The mill was saved by neighbors who helped extinguish fires after General Sheridan's Union troops attempted to burn the mill during the 1864 burning of the Shenandoah Valley. In 2009 the mill was once again saved by volunteer efforts to rebuild a section of crumbling wall which was 17 inches out of plumb.
- The mill's water wheel. The mill was listed on the National Register of Historical Places and as a Virginia Historic Landmark in 2006

- The guest speaker was Dean Webster of VDOT's Safety Service Patrol, a free service to motorists with disabled vehicles on Virginia's interstate highways.
- Mr. Webster even brought along one of VDOT's patrol trucks. These modified Ford F-250s cost nearly $170,000 and this one is equipped with a $20,000 traffic camera.
- After the guest speaker, W-S members were finally able to dig into lunch.
- During the brief business meeting, Nelson Driver updated the group about the upcoming (June 7-8) Old Dominion Meet in Norfolk. The deadline for host hotel reservations is May 3.
- Richard Obenschain told the club members about the recently completed Gasparilla Concours d'Elegance held in Tampa, Florida. Richard had just returned from the event about two hours prior, having driven Woodrow Wilson's 1919 Pierce-Arrow limousine on to the show field. He reported that this is the farthest south Wilson's Pierce-Arrow had traveled.

- During his travels there, Jimmy found many of the vehicles were Russian in origin, such as the Lada shown here.
- The result of years of Soviet occupation was a large supply of Russian built trucks of all types.
- A typical meal in Tajikistan can include vegetables, a creamy dressing, mutton, naan, an ovenbaked flatbread...and yes, RC Cola!
